Winston

Describe Winston’s character as it relates to his attitude toward the Party. In what ways might his fatalistic streak contribute to his ultimate downfall?

He hated the Party and as he thought about it more he hated them even more! I couldn't figure out why he just didn't leave when he had the chance and just keep going (when he was in the forest). When one thinks they are doomed then they usually are.

Winston obviously hated the party and secretly fought to preserve what he knew to be true, by constantly trying to hold on to what he had learned in the past. He tried to fight it, and really had to be broken down in the Ministry of Love, but he knew he could not win, and therefore he could not win. He probably couldn't have changed the big picture, but if he'd stopped thinking he was doomed and would one day have to confess, he might have been able to at least resist letting himself be brainwashed.
