Favorite books are the Anne series and Emily series by L.M Montgomery, the Harry Potter series by JK Rowling, Timeline and Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton,just about everything by Shannon Hale (especially Goose Girl and Book of A Thousand Days), the Fablehaven series by Brandon Mull, the Eragon series by Christopher Paolini, the Hunger Games trilogy and Gregor series by Suzanne Collins, the Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare, and Leviathan series by Scott Westerfeld. It probably could have been written in another time in history but I think the setting was good and the current time in our history something that could be useful for someone (Orwell) trying to catch our attention now.
I think 1984 was maybe chosen because it was within Orwell's sight. He used parts of history that had still existed in his time and based on tendencies he was seeing in the government, predicted where we were headed. He had to maintain some parts of the world he knew. Things he was afraid would become extinct.
