Character development

Did your opinion Edward, Jacob, or Bella change while reading Eclipse?

Mine did and that is why I'm curious. It didn't change about Bella or Jacob really although this is when I really started rallying for Jacob and this is why: Edward had always been a little too easy to anger for me but I still loved him. What drove me crazy was how Bella wasn't 'allowed' to visit La Push. I know Edward felt like he was protecting her but reading how he showed up and disabled her truck in ch. 2 and followed her around, had Alice 'kidnap' her, etc drove me nuts. I hate it when guys (or anybody) is controlling like that. I know I'm known for "Don't tell me what to do" so this probably won't surprise anyone. I also had a lot of respect for Edward though during the Compromises chapter so I still like him a lot and think he's a great character but I think these were the reasons I became so drawn to Jacob.

I agree - Edward was pretty controlling, almost treating Bella like a child in not allowing her to see Jacob. I think his reaction was fairly "human," although most guys would do it out of jealousy rather than out of concern for the g i r l 's safety. When you think about it, if you truly believed a friend of yours was going somewhere that they would be in real danger, and you couldn't talk them out of it, I think most people would be willing to go to extremes to try to protect them. Edward did redeem himself when he figured out that A) she was safe with Jacob, and B) that he was hurting her by acting the way he did.

The other thing that I liked about Jacob is the way he wouldn't just give in to Bella's childish demands. I loved it when he would tell her to grow up or give him a break. I wish Edward WASN'T always so willing to baby her. But what can I say - with all his flaws, my heart still belongs to Edward. ;) I hope Stephenie is good to them all in Breaking Dawn.... SATURDAY woo hoo!

My opinion of Edward changed when I saw him work so hard to change antagonistic feelings about Jacob. He got to the point where he could see that Bella was safe with him, then working so hard in the alliance between the wolves and the Cullens to find a way to work together for the good of all (he actually worked harder on this than Jacob did at first), and then later seeing the feelings of love Bella had for Jacob and allowing her to search her feelings and decide between who she really wanted.

That's true. He was a good sport about the Jacob thing in the end. That would have to have been really hard for him.

Alice

When Edward explained to Bella that Alice can't see her if she is with Jacob's pack, he phrased it as "your future got lost, just like theirs." The other Cullen powers work on Jacob and his friends- why do you think Alice's power is different?

That's an interesting question. I hadn't consciously noticed that it was just Alice's powers that didn't work with them. I haven't re-read this one yet, so I'll come back...

I think it may be a defensive thing like Edward mentions. Maybe. I mean, if she could know what their enemies were doing that wouldn't be good. (if the Cullens were bad and the werewolves had to take them out that is)

I am thinking that when the treaty was made it protected the wolves by keeping their plans and movements safe from someone who could see their movements. However, when they make their pact with the Cullens to fight against the newborns and Victoria they somehow are able to "talk" to each other and share thoughts and what is happening from the "eyes" of each other. Does that make any sense??

They were actually able to talk to each other because the werewolves are all kind of one channel when in wolf form and then Edward can read their minds. But, you bring up a really good point about the treaty thing... I wonder.

Jasper

What insight did you get into Jaspers character and personality? What more remains a mystery? Will Peter, Charlotte, or Maria come back into his life?

I think I understand more of why it is harder for him than the others. It is good that while in the midst of that life he led he yearned for something else, that he was depressed. I hope that he will never go back to it. I think without Alice he might not have the strength to abstain. I really hope that the vamps of his past do not come back. I am sure someone will but I think it is going to be the Denali clan... maybe it will be all of them.

Yeah. I was expecting something way different (we'll have to wait to talk specifics until September), but I do like the way it ended. I was surprised by the way the story unfolded so quickly in the beginning, although I did guess two things that ended up happening. I'm glad that it has come to a conclusion so I can come back to reality and get some sleep! :)

I love sanya and annegirl's comments. They know what happens but I don't! I won't read "Breaking Dawn" until I have finished reading " All Creatures...". How's that for self-control?? Jasper's experiences in the past with the newborns was critical in the plans for the wolves and Cullens to defeat them. I hope his self-control will be strong in the future. I think if he were not strong he might have "turned" in the battle. If the bad vamps from his past appear again I hope he will be strong enough to not fall back to past deeds.

Why do you think Leah turned into a werewolf when none of the stories ever mentioned a woman wolf before?How will her presence be significant to the pack? To Sam? To Emily?

I keep thinking about this and I really can't come up with a good theory. Anyone?

Maybe her parent's genes gave her this phasing gift.? Since there is no explanation of her future works in Twilight one might guess she can atone for her actions that caused Jacob to get hurt in her defense by protecting others in the pack at a later time.

Bella

Bella seems adamant that she will become a vampire, even though there is much opposition to the idea. Do you think Charlie or Renee will figure it out? What about Mike and her friends from school? How do you think they would react if they did and do you think they could change her mind?

I don't think anyone will figure it out. I mean, who goes around thinking "I think my friend is going to be a vampire." But maybe Renee will since Bella says she is observant... maybe she would 'know' the way Bella did at first. If they did know I'm sure they would ALL do everything they could to stop it even if that meant kidnapping her and sticking her in a cave somewhere far away but I don't think anyone can change her mind if Edward and Jacob can't.

Her friends don't have a clue I don't think. I think they would freak out if they found out vampires were in their midst. Renee is too far away in her own little world to really pay attention. I think if anyone guesses it will be Charlie...as he cares about Bella and is questioning things around the wolve's howlings when he is with Billy (when the battle is going on) and then Jacob's injuries (in spite of the motorcycle story). Maybe Billy will at some point tell him what is going on.

Jacob and Leah

It seems that Jacob's story is following a similar path as Leah Clearwater's story. Do you think that they will bond over that or will he continue to dislike her? What other characters' stories have similar paths?

I hope Jacob and Leah imprint. What a convenient way to get him away from Bella... ha ha! Not that I don't like Jacob - I think he's great. But all my hopes for Bella and twitterpation (nice word!) are saved for Edward.

I so hope they don't imprint!! I don't like Leah. I mean, I understand why she's bitter and mean toward Sam but she doesn't have to be like that to Jacob!(I'm talking about the last chapter) I think they will both imprint on someone though. Maybe when he gets back she will have changed. Who knows? Well, I guess we will in the next few days! Yay.

I hope they will imprint on someone else but after Jacob comes back who knows (unless you have already read the next book!) But right now I still have hopes for Jacob and Bella as I really don't want Bella to "Vamp". I like Edward, too, though! Too bad polygamy in reverse couldn't work here!?

Treaty

The Cullens and the Quileutes have come together over a common goal- to kell the attacking vampires. How will this new found camaraderie affect the original treaty? What changes should be made and what parts should remain as they are?

I think it kind of makes the original treaty null and void. I mean, originally it meant war if the Cullens bit another human but that doesn't seem to be the case anymore. I think they all were able to come to understand and respect each other... not like or accept necessarily but I hope that this continues in the story. I think they would be smart to band together against any further obstacles of which I am sure there will be many.

It affected how they worked together and the crossing of treaty lines, if necessary. I loved how the two groups started working together, caring about each other (Carlisle doctoring Jacob when he was hurt), and seeing the good in each other. I hope that continues!

Rosalie

Does Rosalie's story change the way you feel about her? What insight did you get into her character and her personality? What more still remains a mystery? Despite how it turned out, was it hypocritical of her to change Emmet?

It did change some of my opinion of her. I felt for her because of the violent way in which she was treated. I can understand the desire to be a mom and how that would make her feel mad at someone willing to give that up when all she ever wanted was to be human, a mother, and wife. I believe she was already an arrogant girl and pretty selfish... and that is why that has carried over. I don't think that she was hypocritical because Emmet was dying. I mean, Carlisle had his life stolen, Edward was dying anyway, Alice had it stolen although to protect her, Jasper had it stolen, Emmet was dying anyway, Esme was dying anyway... Bella is the only one who would be giving up her life willingly and for no other reason but love ... although it may be to protect her too.... so I can see why Rosalie would be mad at her for wanting to do that. I think we all can see people willing to give up precious things seemingly without question and we don't necessarily understand why they would do it. That's what free will is for I guess.

Yes, my opinion of her changed a lot when she finally shared her story with Bella. However, one can still see the pride in her. I think I would wonder why someone who had a choice in life, like she felt Bella did, would want to give that up.

Dangers

Victoria represented a real danger to Edward and Bella. What other dangers exist for them that aren't as apparent? Will running away to Alaska keep them safe? What other options do they have?

I don't think that Alaska would keep them safe. I think that Tanya's coven is going to play a role in Breaking Dawn and I don't think it will be a "good" one. That's just my theory....

Victoria was a big threat as she was obsessing about the demise of Bella. The next big threat was the "newborns" being created by Victoria. She and her "team" would have found Bella where ever she went. The other danger was not knowing exactly what the Volturi would do and if they were seeking Bella, too. They did come to destroy the newborns but arrived there late...hoping the Cullens might be destroyed before they "arrived".
