The Earl
What sort of man is Fauntleroy's grandfather, the Earl? What does he want from his grandson? Why is Fauntleroy able to have such an effect on him?

The Earl is a selfish, mean man that cares only for title, money, and breeding.
I believe that to begin with all he wants from his grandson is someone that will be a 'proper' heir by looking handsome and being well mannered. That is why he likes Cedric so much to begin with which opens him up to the relationship they eventually share.
The Earl is a mean, selfish man who cared only for himself and having a good time and enjoying his riches. He neglected his wife and sons and disowned the Captain when he went to America and married a "disgraceful" American woman. Those around him who worked for him and people in the village and even his own sister did not like him at all. He was so ashamed of his two elder sons and was so relieved to see Cedric to be a handsome and friendly boy in whom he could have pride and feel that he had a excellent heir. Then because of Cedric's goodness and love his heart began to change.
