Stylists
Why are the tributes given stylists and dressed so elaborately for the opening ceremony? Does this ceremony remind you of events in our world, either past or present?

The tributes need to make a very good impression on the Capitol and the viewers and supporters. They need to be remembered so that when support is needed they will get it. It could be the difference between life and death.
Beauty contests, the Academy Awards... things like that are occasions where the "players" need to make a big impression on those casting the votes!
They needed to make the games seem exciting, especially to the capitol audience. I think they needed to make the players seem more like characters than humans.
