Panem

How does Katniss feel about the country of panem? Why does she need to make her face "an indifferent mask" and be careful what she says in public?

It sounds like a very dreary place to live and I think she just gets by the best she can in supporting her mother and sister by her hunting. Because people are watched she has to be careful that she doesn't say anyting "wrong" or get caught hunting by those who would not be too happy about it!

If you take different parts of the United States as they are right now and grouped everyone together, we could be really close to having "Panem" for our country. There would be a few differences, like you could have freedom of speech and there are no Hunger Games. But there is a lot of hunger and strict rules. There are a lot of twisted people in government, too.

That's true Karen.
I think she loves her district but like anyone would she wishes for more freedom, a better life, and an end to the cruel hunger games.
