evildoers
How did Galbatorix establish his rule of Alagaesia? What experiences turned him into a cruel and feared ruler? What do we learn of the Shade's past when he is killed?

I think Galbaorix took over by betrayal of others and gathering evil doers around him to do his bidding. The Shade had very sad things happen to him but instead of combating evil he wanted power to destroy and sold his soul in order to have that power.
Galbatorix let power rule him. When his dragon died and he petitioned for a new one and was turned down- he decided to not take no for an answer by creating the Forsworn.
Each evil act he committed or had commited by others created more evil in him and more thirst for power.
We learn that the Shade is a person that was taken over by a Shade. It is sad but if I remember correctly he was so devastated that he let it happen.
