Scarlett and Ashley

What did you think of the relationship between Ashley and Scarlett?

Ughh. If you follow me on Good reads you will have seen my comment about Ashley.
I was set to love Ashley.
I haven't watched the movie since I was young so I probably missed a lot of things but I went into it thinking Scarlett only wanted him because Melanie had him.
I thought he loved her like a sister or friend the way Melanie did.
Boy was I surprised.
Scarlett had obviously loved him for a while and I feel like he did lead her on. Then all of sudden he is marrying Melanie.
He should have told Scarlett from the moment in the library that he did not love her- even if he did.
Then he could have released her. Maybe she would have been able to love one of her husbands before it was too late if he hadn't had such a tight hold on her.
I saw him as a man that was portrayed as a perfect gentleman to most people and yet he wasn't acting gentlemanly.

I think they loved the idea of each other but never could have made each other happy. I think Scarlett wanted him because she didn't get him and also because she could take care of him and be in charge. She had this idea that he was perfect and she refused to see the real man behind the idea. I liked when Rhett tells her that she is reaching for the moon and pushing away happiness with both hands to reach for something that would never make her happy, or something like that. If you told Scarlett she couldn't have something, it was all she wanted, and she could not see clearly beyond the desire to win.

In the book (unlike the movie) you get the back story of Scarlett and her feelings for Ashley. She did have a big crush on him (but still flirted with all the boys because it was fun for her to feel so "loved")and liked him a lot. She became obsessed with him when she found out he was getting married because she felt he loved her. In Ashley's family the tradition was to marry cousins. I think Ashely knew he had to do this and loved Melanie but I think he also loved Scarlett but knew he couldn't marry her but had that secret wish that he could have if it hadn't been for the tradition. When he married Melanie he should have put Scarlett out of his life, told her that, and went on with his life and not led her on with tidbits of love here and there. And Scarlett should have "forgotten" him once he got married.
