Atlanta
Were you surprised by the way Atlanta was described when the war was over? Why do you think so many of the former slaves stayed with their families?

I think that if you were a "house slave" and had been for as long as someone like Mammy had been, you would be part of the family.
She would have raised those children and loved them.
I agree that they became part of the family. This was all they had ever known and there was really nothing waiting for them out in the world. It broke my heart when Scarlett ran into Big Sam and he felt lost. Even those who had freed the slaves did not want or welcome them. They had no means, or education and no way to go out and build a life.
Many slaves had become a integral part of a family and knew no other way of life. They felt security and love and importance and an investment, especially Mammy.
