How do you view the destruction of Manderley? Is it horrific...or freeing...or justified vengeance on Rebecca's part? Would the de Winters have had a fulfilling life at Manderley had it not burned?
I think they could have been happy there. I think it was sad that either Mrs. Danvers or Favell or both started the fire to destroy Manderly. But on the other had maybe the destruction was good as it destroyed the memories of Rebecca and she could no longer have a hold on people's lives...and they could start anew.
That was sad. I had wished that there was a little more story there when it ended. It was so abrupt. Manderley is on fire. The end. Very interesting story.
Sad, but appropriate. Manderely really belonged to Rebecca, in the end, and I think the burning was symbolic of a fresh start. Cheryl, There is a sequel called Mrs. DeWinter if you didn't like the ending. It is NOT written by Daphne DuMaurier and I don't appreciate other people writing sequels to someone else's book. I feel like it was her story to tell and to conclude or not conclude however she saw fit. I like the ending, like I said it feel symbolic to me. It feels over.
