Blackmail
After Favell threatens to blackmail him, Maxim calls on Colonel Julyan. Why? Why does Maxim act in a way that seems opposed to his own best interests?

He wanted witnesses to what Favell had threatened...and then some kind of "proof" that would make Favell who was normally drunk look like the idiot he was. There was the possibility of protection here. If Maxim had tried to escape the threats and and not got the law involved he would have looked very suspicious.
He knew he had to if he wanted any chance of not getting caught.
