I really enjoyed this book. I wasn't sure if I would but it hooked me from the beginning and it really left me thinking about a lot of things. It was a great reading experience... especially coming off of last month. :)
It makes me want to go read it again. I loved how the story was told. My favorite speech ever was given by Martin Luther King Jr. I have a deep respect for what the black people had to go through, not just in this time, but also during slavery. It is a lesson that we should remember, not just with black people, but with all races.
This was really big around the same time as Water for Elephants which I did not like so I almost skipped this one due to guilt by association. Then when the church ladies went to see the movie, I decided to go, but I won't see anything that I haven't read so I crammed it in the night before the movie and was surprised how much I liked it. I have read way too much about slavery, segregation and the holocaust this year and I am trying so hard to understand these dark parts of our history. I can not but I am grateful for people who are telling these stories and speaking out for those who never had the chance.
I loved this book! It was so well written and I felt like I was there listening to the people talk as she wrote in their style of speaking. I was in high school in the 60's and although not in the South (Detroit)I saw how some good blacks were treated. A friend of mine was a black boy and even at church the other kids would not really associate with him and dance with him at dances. But I was his friend and glad I was. His father was a brave man. He was not able to hold the priesthood at that time but told us that he would wait until the day he could ...and was so thankful for the gospel. There are blacks that did cause trouble and started the riots in Detroit burning everything and just going on a rampage. But there were so many good ones and I loved having their story told!
Hey everybody...This is Marcia and I just wrote the above comment and it came in under Cheryl's name! Sorry! I am not sure how to change it. I will experiment. If it doesn't work I will just write "Marcia" before each comment so you will know it's me! I am at Cheryl's house visiting and that is probably why.
