The Devil uses all of those emotions in one way or another to try to beguile the patient to make poor choices and give up his newly found faith. But in the end the patient has a re-awakening and true conversion to God's ways and Screwtape fails. We are all faced with temptations every day and have to be aware of what is happening to us. We need to make choices and do those things that will keep us close to God and not wander off the straight and narrow road.
