I remember Jack said something about how they both "had time on their minds". They really made their time together count. I am so glad my husband is not in the military but there is something beautiful about being separated and reunited all the time. You learn to appreciate time.
I also think the whole book just foreshadowed the loss of Jack...boo,hoo. I totally saw it coming but I was still so sad!
The watch he gave her was his mother's and meant so much to him that he wanted to pass it on to someone he truly loved and who was so important to him. Sarah had his name engraved on his watch to signify that she would love him each minute of the day! Their love became timeless...and each moment that they were together needed to be treasured.
Their lives were so hard and treacherous that I think they knew there were no guarantees of how much time they would have together. I didn't want him to go! I cried like a baby when he was saying goodbye to his kids... Jack! We miss you! ha ha.
We are a group of sisters, mothers, daughters, cousins, aunts, grandmothers, and friends coming together because of our shared love of reading.
