Jack

Jack Elliot is an elusive lover. Why does this make him more desirable, since his role is not forbidden love but unwanted?

I still don't know why Sarah played hard to get but it definitely built excitement. I love that he just kept pursuing her. And I thought it was so cool that he would kiss her and that was considered so racy...oh boy, if they could see the world we live in now.

I never figured that out either. If I were her I wouldn't have played hard to get.. I don't think..
he was just so cool.

Being elusive somehow makes someone seem more desirable. I think even though Sarah played hard to get I think Jack's being there but never totally letting her know how he felt about her (not giving her the letter in his saddlebag)but giving little subtle suggestions from time to time and his way of smiling and talking kept her curiosity going about what he was all about.

I didn't really think Sarah was playing hard to get necessarily. She knew from the start that her mom disapproved of soldiers. I kind of think she was attracted to him from the beginning, but tried to talk herself out of it because she was trying so hard to be a lady like Savannah. I think she was falling for him while trying to convince herself that he was a scoundrel. I think Jack always wanted to be with Sarah, but he felt duty bound to go protect people that needed protection. It was her love that kept him going, and his love that kept her going.

I also don't think she was playing hard to get. I think she was lying to herself. I like that the book was all in first person. I felt like i could see all the dimensions, even when she would say that Captain Jack was so awful, the fact that she was talking about him so much told me she really liked him, she just knew it was "wrong" because he was a soldier.
