Liesel and Max
Compare and contrast the lives of Liesel and Max Vandenburg. How does Max's life give Liesel purpose? At what point do Liesel and Max become friends? Max gives Liesel a story called "The Standover Man" for her birthday. What is the significance of this story?

Liesel is German and Max is a Jew. When he first comes to Han's home Liesel is afraid of him. When he becomes sick and she worries that he might die their friendship grows. Before that they started sharing stories and drawing pictures and that helps their friendship grow.
Max wrote the Standover Man because it expressed his feelings of always having someone standing over him.
Max and Liesel have a friendship that grows through their love of books and stories. They both think about what would mean something to the other.
I think they both equally needed each other. They could relate in a way that even Hans and Rudy could not relate to Liesel. They had both been through significant hardship and could strengthen and understand each other. I loved when he felt like he needed to write her that book and I loved her little gifts when he was sleeping. They had so little of monetary value to give but everything they offered each other spoke volumes. How ridiculous that anyone ever had an idea of a master race or that only some people had value. Liesel and Max had so much to offer each other and to the world. We should never define who we love and who we allow in our lives by anything other than their soul.
