Cowards
Hans Junior, a Nazi soldier, calls his dad a coward because he doesn't belong to the Nazi party. He feels that you are either for Hitler or against him. How does it take courage to oppose Hitler? There isn't one coward in the Hubermann household. Discuss how they demonstrate courage throughout the novel.

It is remarkable that he could have called his dad a coward. It took no courage to be a part of the Nazi party. It definitely took courage to not be a part of it and undergo the scrutiny of people who wondered why he wasn't.
I agree that there wasn't a coward in that house.
Every single one of them risked their life for Max... someone they didn't know. Every single one of them stayed strong through it all.
People were so backward and brainwashed and underneath it all probably just very scared. I wonder how many people like Hans Jr. really disagreed with Hitler but did not have the courage to take a stand. The Hubermans had courage to take Liesel in, to take Max in, to then really let him in as a part of the family, to move him upstairs, to let the authorities search the house, to help the Jews who were paraded through town. They never showed anything but courage where I consider these big tough Nazi party leaders to be some of the biggest cowards this world has ever known. What did Hans Jr. do that allowed him to call other men cowards? Nothing! He walked around as a puppet for the party.
