Changing it up

Hale based this book on a Brothers Grimm folk tale, "Maid Maleen", in which the imprisoned lady is the heroine, not her servant. Why might Shannon Hale have changed the heroine in her reworking of the original?

Perhaps in most stories the lady fair is the heroine but this time she wanted the "mucker" girl to be the "lady fair" and be the one who's strengths outshine the real Lady. It maybe shows that no matter where we come from and who we are that we have the potential to be and do great things.
