Mrs. Catherick
Why does Mrs. Catherick allow her own daughter to be placed in an insane asylum, and how does she justify her actions?

She received gifts from Sir Percival and later he paid her money to live in a certain town and let people think she had had an affair with Percival. She knew about his real parentage situation and was agreeable to keeping it a secret as she felt sorry for him. Later, Anne had overheard her talking about Percivals real situation and repeated it out loud. He wanted her put in an asylum to keep her quiet. Mrs. Catherick agreed to it if it was a nice place. She said she never liked Percival. If she didn't, she should have stopped all gifts and payments for a living but she didn't want to give those up and they had given her a chance to be an accepted lady in the town. How a mother could agree to have her child put away to keep her quiet is beyond me. I had no respect for her, even though she felt she deserved it, because she could be bought and allowed Anne to go through what she did.
That is right. She did it because she wanted to be 'respected' and live a certain way. She was horrible.
