Moral lessons

What moral lessons do you think the author was trying to teach his son through these characters? Which, do you believe, is the most valuable?

I imagine he was using Toad as an example of what not to do and how not to act.
I think the underlying theme in the book is friendship and home. Maybe he was trying to teach his children to value these things.

I agree with Cheryl, but I also think that he was trying to teach his son the importance of good friends. Mole was a quiet fellow and happened to make decent friends by chance. A good lesson is trying to be a friend to someone even though you think you don't have much in common with that person.

Yes, I agree. I believe it shows the importance of having good and caring friends who will help and intervene when it is good for the safety of another.
