What is it about?

What would you say this novel is "about"? Think again about the Macbeth quotation—"[life] is a tale told by an idiot, signifying nothing." What does Faulkner's tale, told four times, signify?

I asked myself that question every time I was reading it.
I think it was just the authors way of trying to tell a story in an unusual way.
I'm sure there are a lot of deep and profound themes but they were lost on me.
