Sam Hamilton
Sam Hamilton—called a "shining man"—and his children are an immigrant family in the classic American model. What comes with Sam and his wife Liza from the "old country"? How does living in America change them and their children? What opportunities does America provide for the clan, and what challenges?

I think hard work and honesty came with them. They taught their children hard work and love of the land and to enjoy the beauty around them. At least Sam taught that. Liza was more solemn and did not show her feelings and emotions much and was quite stern. But she worked hard to provide a home in spite of such hard times and an inventive husband.
They had the opportunity in America to own land even though it was not the best piece of land. That was probably the challenge...being poor and having to struggle so much.
Oh Samuel! Love him! He brought with him a good attitude and a willingness to work. He was kind and determined and even though he never quite attained the so called American dream I feel like he made opportunities for himself to provide for his family. He had to be a bit creative but he never laid down and quit. Our ancestors were determined and they did not quit. His kids seemed very American to me. They probably learned some of the hard work and values brought from the old country but people adjust quickly. Look how easily Will embraced the life of a businessman and learned to capitalize on the American dream.
