Favorite books are the Anne series and Emily series by L.M Montgomery, the Harry Potter series by JK Rowling, Timeline and Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton,just about everything by Shannon Hale (especially Goose Girl and Book of A Thousand Days), the Fablehaven series by Brandon Mull, the Eragon series by Christopher Paolini, the Hunger Games trilogy and Gregor series by Suzanne Collins, the Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare, and Leviathan series by Scott Westerfeld. I add to my favorites list all the time!

He felt that would help in restoring peace if Thorin were forced to be fair with the men and the elves in the exchange of jewels. The wealth the dwarves had regained was still in the way of fairness and peace and Thorin needed the Arkenstone. Bilbo used that as a bargaining chip.
For the greater good, he wanted to end the battle and he used the arkenstone to mediate. I think he went back as a matter of honor...because he saw himself as part of a team and it would have been cowardly and shameful to run away so he went back to face the music.
He could see both sides of the argument. I think he felt real loyalty to the dwarves but he could see how selfish and stubborn Thorin was being.
