Lenny needed George and George took care of Lenny because Lennie had no one else and was Aunt Clara's nephew. George could have done fine and had an easier life if he hadn't had Lenny to care for...but he did it because no one else would and I think he cared deep down about what happened to Lenny.
I don't believe I know anyone that has that kind of relationship but there are many people who are "caregivers" to others who are sick, disabled, etc. and although it would be easier for them not to do it they choose to do it because they care.
