Diversion
One of the first major diversions from Santiago's journey was the theft of his money in Tangier, which forced him into taking a menial job with the crystal merchant. There, Santiago learned many lessons on everything from the art of business to the art of patience. Of all these, which lessons were the most crucial to the pursuit of his Personal Legend?

I guess he was able to use his ideas to help the crystal merchant whether he wanted the help or not.
He learned to be proactive.
I think learning to make the most of your situation, whatever it is. He never lost sight of his bigger goal, but in the mean time he didn't sit around a complain. He did what he could to help. I think that is important for us too. We may not always get to our final goal as quickly as we'd like, but we can do our best to enjoy the journey.
He had an opportunity to earn money and to learn some skills he hadn't known before. He was dicouraged by the theft and figured he needed to at least earn money to buy a flock...but instead in time he earned money to continue his quest and work hard and have patience to work through the set-back.
I think he learned hard work and perserverance. He learned to continue to sacrifice and achieving our goals ultimately means more when we have had to fight for it. He also learned to bloom where he was planted and instead of griping and complaining he used the time that he was there to really develop and use the skills he had. He was not just showing up for a paycheck. He committed himself to the business and to me being committed and giving 100% even in things you don't necessarily want to do are hugely important and build character.
