It neede to happen. Finally, Dimmesdale confessed to all the people in his sermon the part he had in Hester's sorrow and confessing his love for her and Pearl (but too late as he died there and was not able to finally enjoy a life with them), Hester and Pearl were able to show their love for Dimmesdale, and Roger no longer had the upper hand in bringing down the Preacher. And the community finally saw the reason why Hester never spoke the name of who the father was.

It was so sad. I wish he wouldn't have died but that scene had to happen. He needed to confess. And I think that their daughter needed to see it too.
