Elegant Economy
How do the opening paragraphs give a tone to the book? What does the phrase "elegant economy" mean?

Right away it is established that ladies are the prominent figures in Cranford...and that men are not really needed. The doctor is necessary but only when needed. All is influenced by the women there. "Elegant economy" means to the Cranford women of living with basics but nice basics... not living in poverty but having nice things but not extravagant things... of being able to be independent
You got it. It's interesting how they viewed having things but not too nice of things.
